Abode of Liberation
because group homes aren't for everyone
About Us
Welcome to Abode of Liberation, a boarding house dedicated to welcoming individuals with diverse abilities to live independently with dignity. We offer a liberating environment that caters to those with high-functioning intellectual disabilities, alongside their consumer-directed caregivers.
We understand that different individuals have unique needs and preferences, which is why we welcome those who may have failed agency-directed group home care. Our goal is to create a supportive community where residents can thrive on their own terms. Everyone deserves a living arrangement that suits them best.

“I’d just like to say just as my fellow councilmembers have said, thanking [Abode of Liberation] for putting faith in our community and providing a facility of this nature. This is something that is a niche that
a lot of folks would not think about needed in a community. I look forward… and I wish the best.”

'I know the struggles of individuals. This is giving individuals the opportunity to
improve their life. I have someone personal that I know in a group home and how important it is to have
that opportunity. This is a lodging house… and I appreciate you taking this upon yourself to bring this to
this community. I wish you well.”
- H. Bruce Rappaport
Front Royal Town Councilman
“Most of us strive to create a home filled with love, understanding and support. The Abode of Liberation, a unique, newly formed nonprofit boarding house, is creating that safe, nurturing refuge for adults with
intellectual disabilities.”

FAQ
Is Abode of Liberation a group home?
No. This is a boarding house that welcomes intellectually disabled adults, individuals who seek an alternative to group homes.
What is the difference between a group home and your boarding house?
Group homes follow strict guidelines and comprehensive regulations, under a structured bureaucratic group model where sometimes seemingly-simple issues require lots of meetings and reports. Group homes are agency-directed.
Our nonprofit licensed boarding house provides a more home-like setting with a true focus on what the individual wants and needs, personal health/safety, and social interactions. We are flexible and utilize the common sense approach to decision making. The individuals here receive consumer-directed care and are their own boss.
People who have failed in groups homes have thrived in this boarding house.
Choosing depends on the individual's needs and preferences.
It's crucial to thoroughly research and visit facilities to make an informed decision.
Can the individual go to day support?
Do you have a discount code?
If the individual wants to participate in one of the local day programs, we want them to do so. If the local day programs aren't for them, then they do not have to go.
Where can i buy your products?
What about volunteer work?
We are always looking for ways to contribute to society. We ring the bell for the salvation army, volunteer with animal rescues, and anything else anybody wants to do.
Can the individual have a job?
Absolutely they can, if they want! The individual's personal caregiver can and will job hunt with them to find what they want in the working world.
Who pays?
We house those who have a long-term Medicaid waiver and Social Security Disability. Typically, the SS pays the rent, phone, and gas. The waiver pays for the consumer-directed caregivers. If the individual does not have SNAP for food, we will help them to qualify for SNAP, if possible. As a new nonprofit, we hope to raise funds for general needs.
Do you encourage Special Olympics?
Special Olympics has been a lifechanger here. We participate in Special Olympics in our own county but also surrounding counties. We go wherever the individual's passions take us.
Are pets allowed?
Abode of Liberation is animal friendly, but we are currently at capacity for pets as we now have 12. We think that compassion towards animals is an essential life skill. This is such a core part of our organization that we are not a good fit for those individuals with a fear of animals.
If group homes aren't for everyone, can't the same be said about this boarding house?
This boarding house isn't for everyone! In a situation where an individual negatively impacts their housemates via theft, bullying, etc, that individual may be evicted.
Are visitors screened?
We strive to maintain a warm and welcoming atmosphere. All caregivers undergo comprehensive background checks by the payroll facilitator. To prioritize safety and comfort for all, we check potential visitors through the VA Court System and sex offender lists online. Certain individuals with criminal records may not be permitted to visit to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. We will however assist an individual to visit a loved one in a public place.
